Otoplasty

Cosmetic ear surgery or otoplasty is a procedure to reduce or pin back the size of the ears for those whose ears are noticeably large when compared to the size of their other features.

Having protruding or large ears can be especially difficult for children during adolescence when teasing or bullying can be a major issue.

Otoplasty or ear pinning can balance the appearance and can help children avoid negative interactions with other children or feeling self-conscious about their ears. Results last through adulthood, and adults who have undergone otoplasty as children often express appreciation and relief that they addressed this concern early in life.

Otoplasty or “big ear surgery” can be done on patients of any age, but we recommend that the patient is at least five years of age for safety and because it is around this age that the ears are fully grown.

Adults who did not undergo otoplasty as children are still good candidates for the procedure. While they have already overcome adolescence, large ears can still cause adults to be self-conscious, especially in social or dating situations. Undergoing otoplasty allows patients to be comfortable in their own skin in any setting and frees them from routines they have developed, such as wearing hats or keeping their hair long to camouflage their ears.

About Ear Plastic Surgery

Most ear plastic surgery procedures are performed to cause the ears to sit closer to the side of the head, no longer protruding and sticking out.

Otoplasty starts with an incision behind the ear. Cartilage can be repositioned and relaxed so the ear is brought closer to the side of the head. This new position is then held in place with permanent sutures.

This procedure is normally performed under local anesthesia on an outpatient basis.

Recovery & Healing from Ear Surgery

After otoplasty, the ears will have soft dressings that will stay in place for a few days. It’s important to sleep on your back to allow the ears to heal. This may cause some sleep interruption if you are used to sleeping on your side. It may also be recommended that you wear a medical headband for up to four weeks to help keep your ears in the desired position and to prevent you from displacing them during the healing process.

Risks of Ear Reduction Surgery

While all surgeries share the risks of infection or bleeding, the most important risks specific to otoplasty are the possibilities of overcorrection, where the ears look strange because they are too close to the head or have been tucked into an unusual shape, or under correction, in which the ears still appear too large.
