Fat Injection & Fat Transfer

Facial fat rejuvenation is the process of restoring volume and youthfulness to the appearance by transferring fat to key locations of the face. This procedure is also known as lipostructure, fat transfer, free fat transfer, liposculpture, autologous fat grafting, volume restoration, fat injection and micro-lipoinjection. Facial fat grafting or fat transfer to the face will be used from here on out to refer to this procedure.

Facial Rejuvenation With Your Own Fat

Facial fat grafting is an approach that restores youthfulness to the face without using synthetic fillers or removing or stretching skin. Dr. Goravanchi often uses this procedure along with facelift to add the finishing touches to his patient’s makeover.

Fat grafting or facial fat transfer is the transfer of excess fat cells from various parts of the body and the reimplantation of these cells in facial areas that can use more volume. This is an excellent anti-aging procedure but is also useful for those who may have suffered some type of trauma or disease that resulted in less facial volume.

Dr. Goravanchi recommends the use of local anesthesia only for your entire fat grafting procedure. If you are undergoing body contouring or liposuction as a procedure in itself, you may be able to use this fat for your facial fat transfer. You may also opt for a small amount of fat to be harvested for the fat transfer specifically. Typical donor sites are the abdomen or buttocks.

A small cannula is used to carefully remove fat so the membranes of the fat cells are not damaged. A centrifuge is used to remove excess fluids, and damaged fat cells are removed as well. After this, the fat is then transferred to areas such as the lips, the folds near the mouth, the cheeks, the temples, the chin and the under the eyes. If possible, depending on the area being addressed, the fat graft is injected into the muscle, as there is greater vascularity there, which improves the longevity of the fat graft.

Surgeons are realizing time and again that cosmetic improvement through the use of fat transfers to the face produces wonderful results. Plus, most patients of average weight actually have an abundant supply of fat that can be used for facial fat grafting. There is also less risk of allergic reaction to synthetic substances.

As the popularity of this procedure has grown, facial fat grafting techniques have improved. The micro-droplet or “threading” approach may extend the longevity of the fat graft.

Facial fat grafting is not very invasive. The most common side effect is moderate swelling and the location of the injection and the donor site may feel sore or tight for a few days.

Which areas of the face can be addressed with fat grafting?

Most areas of the face and body can be enhanced with fat transfers. These include:

  • Marionette or nasolabial lines near the nose and mouth
  • Temples
  • Lips
  • Cheeks
  • Chin
  • Under eye hollows
  • Wrinkles around the mouth
  • Jawline

Am I candidate for facial fat grafting?

The most important factor in ensuring a patient is ready for a facial fat transfer is that they are in overall good health, without an active disease or pre-existing medical conditions. It is essential that each patient has realistic expectations as to what can be achieved what the procedure. It is important that you are mentally and emotionally stable so that you can easily transition through the recovery process.

With all of these criteria met, we can look to the specific issues that you would like to address through fat grafting. Aging will break down collagen and facial fat stores and reduce the elasticity of skin, causing wrinkles. If you feel that you appear more haggard, hollow or skeletal than you used to but you are not overly skinny, you are probably a good candidate for facial fat grafting.
