BREAST IMPLANT REVISION
Breast implant revision is an increasingly common plastic surgery procedure in the world. There are many reasons why women undergo breast implant revision – either due to a physical change in appearance or a desire for something different. Primarily, women are seeking a fuller and shapelier appearance compared to their existing implants or a correction of a complication.
During your consultation, Dr. Goravanchi will evaluate your existing implants and recommend alternatives to help meet your goals. These could include implant removal, replacement, or even an alternative procedure such as a breast lift. During your consultation, he will also discuss with you the process or technique he will use for your breast implant revision procedure.
WHO IS A CANDIDATE FOR BREAST IMPLANT REVISION?
Potential candidates include women who wish to obtain new implants for one of the following reasons:
- Desire for a different size, shape, or feel of your breasts.
- Dissatisfaction with the results of the prior procedure.
- Breast deflation.
- Leakage or rupture.
- Breast asymmetry.
- Switch between silicone to saline implants or vice versa.
- Breasts have descended too low.
- Capsular Contracture (shrinking of breasts to the point where they become hard).
- Infection, wrinkling, shifting, or loss of cleavage.
- An MRI or ultrasound that indicates a shift or change in implants.
- Trauma, accident, complications, or other factors.
- Other medical, physiological, or personal reasons.
THE BREAST IMPLANT REVISION PROCEDURE
The procedure is usually performed with the patient under general anesthesia. Techniques depend on your particular case and what you wish to correct. In most cases, implants are replaced, so the technique used is similar to your original breast augmentation.
Whenever possible, Dr. Goravanchi will use your existing incisions, but some cases may require new incisions.
RECOVERY FROM BREAST IMPLANT REVISION
Most breast implant revision surgeries require the same recovery period as after breast augmentation. You will experience some swelling, bruising, tightness and soreness. We will provide you with a surgical bra that you must wear for a few weeks, as well as pain medication to make you more comfortable as you heal. We will also provide you with full post-op instructions for washing your stitches and when to come back to our office for follow up appointments.
Most of our patients choose to take 1-2 weeks off from work after surgery. You can return to exercise within a month to 6 weeks.
TYPES OF BREAST IMPLANTS
Breast implants come in many shapes and sizes, with differing inner and outer materials. Together, you and Dr. Goravanchi will select the option that is best suited for you and most likely to achieve the results you desire.
All breast implants have an outer pliable envelope (or shell). The contents of the envelope are used to achieve fullness and create the most natural breast-like feeling possible. The implants are filled with either saline or silicone gel. Saline is salt water, much like the fluid that makes up 70% of the human body. If the implant should leak and the saline is released, it can be safely absorbed by your body. Silicone gel-filled implants are also FDA-approved and very safe.
The implant shapes are generally round, oval, or contoured. The surface of the implants can be smooth to the touch or textured.
