Facial Implants (Chin/ Cheek/ Jaw Augmentation)
Chin Implants
While many people may not realize it, the facial structure, not just the individual features, plays a large role in others’ first impressions of you. A defined facial structure, especially a well distinguished chin, is an important element in making a strong, confident first impression. Chin augmentation or a chin implant is an excellent way to improve the definition of the face.
Chin augmentation can be performed as a single procedure or it can be done in combination with other cosmetic procedures such as rhinoplasty, facelift or cheek implants. Whether or not it is performed by itself or along with other procedures, a chin implant is an excellent procedure to improve your profile and facial structure.
About Chin Augmentation Surgery
Chin augmentation, also known as chin implant surgery, takes one hour. Mild sedation and local anesthesia are used to manage pain and discomfort. General anesthesia is an option depending on your personal medical history and whether or not you are choosing to undergo other procedures at the same time as your chin implant.
Chin implants are normally inserted through the natural skin crease located beneath the chin or through an incision made inside the lower lip. Prior to surgery, your doctor selects an implant that will best enhance your profile and facial structure. Chin implants come in a variety of shapes and sizes and are made of solid silicone material (unlike the gels used in breast implants). During the surgery, the chin implant is inserted into a pocket directly on top of the patient’s natural chin.
Chin Augmentation Healing & Recovery
It is normal to experience some discomfort and swelling in the chin area for several days after surgery, which may include difficulty speaking or smiling. It is essential to follow the postoperative instructions provided to you. This will include guidelines regarding dental care, eating and restrictions on certain activities.
Chin Implant Risks
The pain and discomfort after your chin implant surgery should not be significant. We will recommend pain medication, which should be taken as directed. As with any surgical procedure, there are risks of infection or reactions to anesthesia. In the rare event that infection does occur, the chin implant may have to be removed if the infection does not respond to antibiotics. Other complications include a chin implant that is not properly aligned. If this occurs, a second operation may be necessary to reposition it.
